Help Name The New Fire Hall!

The City of Grande Prairie is encouraging the public to take part in a process to help name the Third Fire Station.

This is the first time residents have been invited to participate in the naming of a City fire facility.

The two existing stations bear the names of historical community figures. The North Hall is named after William Salmond – an area pioneer – and the South Hall recognizes Pete Eagar – the first full-time Fire Chief of the Grande Prairie Fire Department.

“This is an opportunity to involve citizens in a positive, community-building experience,” says Dan Lemieux, Fire Chief. “We want to celebrate the contributions of our founders.”

Residents can send an e-mail to thirdfirehall@cityofgp.com with a nominee and a rationale of 100 words or less explaining why the Third Fire Station should be named after that person.

Proposals can also be mailed to Rick Adair at P.O. Bag 4000, Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 6V3.

A safety related prize will be awarded for the winning submission!

“The Station doesn’t necessarily have to be named after a fire-related figure,” says Rick Adair, Project Manager of the Third Fire Station. “The Grande Prairie Fire Department appreciates the role all our community builders played in shaping the city.”

The deadline for nominees is September 15. City Council will have final approval of the Third Fire Station name.

The new facility, located at 97 Avenue and 118 Street, will open in Spring 2012.

Commit One Simple Act Today!

The City of Grande Prairie has accepted the challenge to encourage as many residents as possible to commit to "One Simple Act". That act can be as simples as using a reusable bag, decreasing your shower time by five minutes, composting, turning the temperature in your fridge down, or reducing your idling time.

We need your help! We currently have 110 people who have registered their commitment to one act. We need more! Our challengers have 124 residents who have registered, and Camrose has 209 registered participants.

It is simple – will take about 5 minutes of your time. Please click on this link  http://calculator.ecoactionteams.ca/welcome.aspx and sign up for the EcoAction calculator, join our team (City of Grande Prairie – EcoAction Challenge), and answer the ten questions. It is that simple! You will also learn how much money, water, and energy that you can save. Oh, and once you have completed your commitment – if you send me an email I will enter you in the draw for a prize package worth $200.00.

Please forward this to your friends and co-workers and encourage them to commit to One Simple Act.

50th Anniversary Photo Contest

Here's another chance for you to win a $100 gift certificate good at any down town business - all you have to do is identify this location and what stands on the site (at the centre of the picture) today. The contest is part of the City's 50th Anniversary celebrations and is meant to encourage people to think about how our community has changed over the years.

This month's pictures comes courtesy of the Daily Herald Tribune archives. Darrell Winwood helped me dig back through all the photos to find this one from 1983:

The photo will also be published on the City of Grande Prairie page in the April 18th paper with information on how to submit your entry. Or, if you like, you can email me with your entry and I'll forward it along but make sure you include:

• Your Name
• Your Daytime Phone Number
• A Description of Where in the City the picture is from
• A Description of what stands at that site now

The winner will be chosen from a random draw from all the correct answers submitted before the deadline, so hurry!

Safeway Looking to Give Away Money!

I received this letter by email and thought the best way to share it would be here.

Dear Mr. Bill Given ,

RE: $3.4 Million Donated - Charities Wanted

Since its inception in 1998, the Safeway We Care program has raised over $20 million for local charities. This year alone the program presented a record-breaking $3.4 million to charity. We are now seeking more charities to support.

The focus of Canada Safeway’s 2008 We Care program is on children and families living with physical and developmental disabilities. Our goal is to raise money and awareness, helping those living with disabilities live life to their full potential.

This November the employees of each store will select their partner cause for next year's campaign, scheduled to run January to April, 2008. Consistent features of selected causes will be a large volunteer base to support three national fundraising days, clear illustration of how the dollars will be used, and demonstration as to how the cause is relevant to the community the store serves.

We are hopeful that you might be able to share the enclosed application with those in your community that may fit with the above criteria. More information and applications are also available at your local Safeway or by visiting www.safeway.ca. Applications can be dropped off at any Safeway prior to the deadline of November 3, 2007.

Thank you for your continued support of Canada Safeway and our mutual desire to make this community a better place. For more information, don't hesitate to call us at (403)730-3380.

Sincerely,

CANADA SAFEWAY LIMITED

Joy Syratt
